Railway Platform for Transporting Fresh Products

RAILWAY PLATFORM FOR TRANSPORTING FRESH PRODUCTS

More than 135 million of people or equivalent with 50% of Indonesian citizen stay in Java island. Jakarta-Bogor-Depok-Tangerang-Bekasi (Jaboetabek) or greater Jakarta is a most densely populated. Fresh products delivery is an important issue that how to connect to the last mile destination.

Indonesia especially Java island has had a land infrastructure better than before. This will give easier in connecting each cities that need a healthy food. But regarding to increasing the population, curently, the traffic between cities is too crowded. So Indonesia need “Smart Supply Chain Concept Involving Rail” for fresh products and pharma.

All issues that mentioned above have been discussed between ARPI and PT. Kereta Api Logistics (KALOG) last week.  Hasanuudin Yasni, from ARPI, explained about a future consolidation that the network of smart logistics hubs should be based on geographcal factors, such as existing transport infrastructure and future opportunities, and also on economic factors like trade flow analysis of prospected major users of this hub. Per hub, at least two means of transport are available to reach other hub. These hubs should ideally be operated by collaborating two or more companies of FMCG and or retailers with sufficiently large volumes or more probably by an independent logistics provider that can combine flows. By consolidating flows, the economic viability of non-road transportation increases, and therefore large constant volumes of goods (fresh products) can be shipped (integrated system). Peak transport capacity or occasional express shipment can still be carried by truck. A small description of the Indonesian railway market (logistics) is necessary to understand the current situation. This railway program has to have a positive implications and can be recognize, compare with the past, when the supply chain was mainly focused on road transport, congestion had a major impact on schedulling truck rides. Time was lost, efficiency went down, cost rose. “This concept has to reduce cost if KALOG will get a success in this business!”, Yasni added.

Meanwhile, KALOG Management explained about providing its facilitation at terminal hub for loading and unloading has been a pay attention, especially to maintain product’s temperature. From west to east and its return. The Integrated Logistics Port (PLB) that how to connect among others (shippers, railways and trucks) also will be managed well by using online internets and communication. Based on program, PLB will be prepared at Jakarta Tanjung Priok (Jakarta warehouse and Sungai Lagoa-2), Cilegon, Klari, Gedebage, Sidotopo, Benteng Miring, Ronggo Warsito and Pethek. All connectors above will be as a good transit area near the sea port or dry port (if needed to connect to sea port).
